HOUSE IN A FIELD

The grassy fields of the property run down to rocky bluffs overlooking the harbor.  The goal was to create a family home that doubled as an artists’ community center.  Foresight on the part of the owner called for the two-level home and adjoining art studios, hay lofts and llama pens to be wheelchair accessible.  Building a home on the glacial rocks at water’s edge proved prohibitive, so the land was engineered to harness the natural rain runoff to feed a year-round pond sidling to the east reaches of the home.  The home features a hybrid of recycled timber framing, reclaimed longleaf pine floors, along with conventional light framing.  Each space within the home projects glassily into the surroundings, with natural light on 3 sides of each room wherever possible.  Wide doors to the south allow the owner to pull their bed onto the upper porch on summer evenings for outdoor slumber.
