GARDEN GETAWAY

The challenge: convert the dark, unfinished basement of a 1908 Seattle bungalow into a warm, comfortable, livable, and leasable Accessory Dwelling Unit.  The goal was to overcome the subterranean feel of the old basement, clearing out half of the numerous support columns with structural improvements, and take measures to maximize daylight, and provide egress from the bedroom.  Each finished surface was selected with these goals in mind.  Glossy wall tiles in the kitchen and high-sheen ceilings reflect the surrounding views to the yard.  The windows were visually enlarged by adding large, natural wood window flares.  Rift sawn white oak floors lighten the rooms.  Floating walnut shelves bring simple organization to the kitchen.  Brightly colored accent tile adds visual interest in the bathroom.  Each space and finish was carefully designed and furnished to bring a sense of cleanliness and relaxation to visiting travelers. The space feels at once modern yet exudes the handcrafted warmth of its 1908 roots.
