EASTSIDE ENCLAVE
Entering the 1940’s rambler, one was painfully aware of the low ceilings pressing down upon the open-plan spaces. In response, two thirds of the home were taken completely down to the foundation, which was reused. The original rambler concept was wholeheartedly embraced. The main living areas were lifted high above the floor with vaulted ceilings crowned by a massive skylight peering up to the tall conifers edging the property. Most spaces access the surrounding gardens directly, with the exception of the inward-looking primary suite and study. A team of interior designers collaborated to bring meticulous texture, color and pattern to every surface, to the artwork and to the furnishings. The landscape was built around existing specimen trees, supplemented by new plantings, fountains and spa. Glass and steel canopies and infra-red heaters allow for year-round outdoor gatherings, while still allowing natural light into the home. The brick cladding of the main volume wraps out into the gardens as solid walls, providing sanctuary from the passing street.
